By Conrad Coopersmith

September 30, 2025

Medical coding automation has advanced significantly over the past two decades, evolving from rule-based tools sophisticated solutions powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Options now range from assisted to fully autonomous coding, though true autonomy is still limited to certain specialties. Amid the hype around full automation, the reality is that artificial intelligence delivers best when paired with human expertise. A hybrid approach allows automation technology to accelerate routine tasks while human experts ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality. Success depends on clean data, strong clinical documentation integrity, interoperability, and a roadmap that balances speed with oversight.

Key discussion points include:

  • How medical coding automation has evolved from rule-based systems to AI-powered solutions.
  • Common misconceptions about autonomous coding solution to separate hype from reality.
  • Why a hybrid model combining automation with human expertise is the most effective and reliable approach.
  • The essential key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring automation effectiveness and demonstrating return on investment (ROI) from coding automation initiatives.
